Bungalow District Gets Official Status!
The City of Santa Barbara has designated our neighborhood as a Special Design
District, based in part upon the Lower Riviera Historic Resources Survey,
in which many of us participated. This designation is part of the recently
revised Demolition Ordinance that was passed last October. The Design District
designation was preliminary to defining the core of our neighborhood with
the highest concentration of historic bungalows as a full-fledged Historic
District. The purpose of the Design District is to protect and preserve the
unique character of the area surrounding the Historic District, and provide
protections until the Historic District is officially established. Maps of
the proposed district are available at bungalowhaven.org.
What does being in a historic district mean? Well, since Santa Barbara has
always had such a tradition of stringent design review, it won’t create
any substantial new impediment to getting approvals of building permits. It
does put jurisdiction for all permits under the Architectural Board of Review,
and will require projects to respect the traditional, historic character of
the neighborhood. Within the Historic District, when it is established, the
Historic Landmarks Commission will review major permit applications. Only
visible exterior changes will be affected; interior remodels and minor projects
that didn’t require board review before, will continue to be approved
using a streamlined process.
The City will, within the next three months, adopt guidelines to be used in
design review, and the Bungalow Haven Neighborhood Association has volunteered
to draft them, which gives our members a unique opportunity to participate
and tailor the guidelines to our own needs and concerns. The Historic District
Committee has circulated a preliminary draft to all on our e-mail list. Any
and all comments, suggestions and input will be considered in the interest
of producing guidelines with which we all can live!
Public Home Tour Fundraiser
We are very excited about our latest undertaking in the home tour department!
We will be having our first public home tour, which will be a fundraiser to
benefit BHNA and the non-profit organization, New Directions, which arranges
trips for special needs individuals. Another major goal for this tour is to
educate and raise awareness of the historic resources in our district. The
date for this tour is tentatively set for mid-October and we will keep you
updated as this project takes shape! Anyone who is interested in helping with
the tour, or in donating items for a silent auction/raffle, or in providing
music, food or any other donations please contact Dee Duncan (deeduncan@cox.net).
Upcoming Events
Our next meeting will be on February 17th at 632 E. Sola. Sam Scranton, the
County Bowl General Manager, will be speaking to the group and addressing
concerns and questions we have regarding Bowl functions.
Steve Dowty is coordinating a trip to the Craftsman display at the LA County
Art Museum, which will be in February or March. We will send out an announcement
via e-mail when this trip is finalized.
Garage Sale Fundraiser
The Bungalow Haven Neighborhood Association (BHNA) held its second annual
garage sale on Saturday, October 9, 2004. We had a great time and raised over
seven hundred dollars! Proceeds will go to support our many projects, including
the bungalow home tour, new neighbor packets and this newsletter. Thanks to
Neal Hooker and the Garage Sale Committee for organizing this event.
Please save any donations for this annual event—we will arrange for
pickup service when it gets closer to the sale date (September/October 2005).
Profile: Robert Wilson Hyde by Leslee Sipress, calligrapher.
Robert Wilson Hyde (1875-1951) was a Santa Barbara craftsman who came here
in 1902 and worked as a calligrapher and illuminator (among his many talents).
His work was well known nationally and locally and in addition to his art,
he functioned as a community scribe doing commissions for guest books, family
registers, wedding ephemera, marriage certificates, greeting cards and local
awards. He had an antique shop at the Carrillo Adobe, 11 East Carrillo Street
and lived in our neighborhood at 1225 Salsipuedes Street, where his house
still stands.
